Founder's Story

Cletus K. Oppong MD, MPH, DipABPM

” My journey has been shaped by my experiences with racial discrimination and my unwavering commitment to medicine.”

I moved from Ghana to the United States to pursue my dream of becoming a medical doctor, only to encounter racial discrimination for the first time. Throughout my higher education and residency, I faced covert attempts to derail my career, forcing me to work harder than my peers despite my excellent academic achievements.

This discrimination continued into my professional career as a physician, culminating in a traumatic experience with an employer that left me questioning my future in the medical field. Rather than giving up, I chose to fight back, embarking on a lengthy legal battle to expose the toxic workplace and their retaliation against me when I confronted them about their lackluster Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices. This fight was about more than just my own experiences; it was about shining a light on the injustices faced by so many others.

Driven by my passion for medicine and my commitment to addressing healthcare inequities, I founded OPPMed, a virtual clinic dedicated to public health, preventive medicine, and providing access to care for all. This clinic became a platform for championing these causes and inspired me to establish The Cletus K. Oppong, MD Foundation. Our mission is to bring awareness to discriminatory practices, both covert and overt, in the workplace and to support those who face hostile environments as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals. We strive to empower people to speak up and advocate for themselves.

In addition to my work in the United States, I am deeply committed to improving health outcomes in Ghana. By leveraging my medical expertise and background, I aim to close health gaps and enhance the well-being of my fellow Ghanaians.

As a passionate physician, innovator, and leader, I remain dedicated to the fight for justice and equality, both locally and globally.
